CM1117F 1A LOW DROPOUT VOLTAGE REGULATOR GENERAL DESCRIPTION The CM1117F series of adjustable and fixed voltage regulators are designed to provide 1A for applications requiring high efficiency. All internal circuitry is designed to operated down to 1V input to output differential and the dropout voltage is fully specified as a function of load current. The CM1117F offers current limiting and thermal protection. The on chip trimming adjusts the reference voltage accuracy to2%. Normally the current in the resistor divider used to set the output voltage is selected to meet the minimum load current requirement. The external capacitors must be carefully selected to ensure performance. Thermal Considerations It is important that the thermal limit of the package is not exceeded. The CM1117F has built-in thermal protection. When the thermal limit is exceeded, the IC will enter protection, and VOUT will be pulled to ground. The power dissipation for a given application can be calculated as following: The power dissipation (PD) is PD = IOUT * [VIN - VOUT] The thermal limit of the package is then limited to It must be PD(MAX) = [TJ - TA]/JA where TJ is the junction temperature, TA is the ambient temperature, and JA is around 136C/W for CM1117F. CM1117F is designed to enter thermal protection at 125C. For example, if TA is 25C then the maximum PD is limited to about 0.9W. In other words, if IOUT(MAX) = 0.5A, then [VIN - VOUT] cannot exceed 1.8V. Input Capacitor An input capacitor of at least 10F is required. Ceramic or Tantalum can be used. The value can be increase without upper limit. Output Capacitor An output capacitor is required for stability. placed no more than 1 cm away from the VOUT pin, and connected directly between VOUT and GND pins.
